Let’s Begin With Setting Goals

Let’s Begin With Setting Goals

29 Sep, 2020  /  by Upstate Family Resource Center

Anyone can set goals -how many of us have set those New Year Resolutions or say we will do THIS or THAT by this time? I know I have. But it is important to set goals–goals give us direction and a purpose.

So, let’s do a little exercise. It won’t hurt–I promise. Take a look at this recipe below:

Do you think you can make a good Apple Crunch using this recipe? I might be able to squeak by based on my current knowledge of baking, but I’m not sure I could make a really good dessert based on this.

So. Ask yourself– “What’s missing?” Do you know how much cinnamon is enough or would you go all in and make a “cinnamon challenge” based recipe? I’m not even sure how many apples you would need– 6? 8? 12? Your guess is as good as mine. And don’t even as me about a pastry blender!

Well, let’s try this again. Take a look at this 👇👇 recipe an see if it looks like something you would try:

This looks more like it, doesn’t it. So you would need 8 apples and only 1 teaspoon of cinnamon (I probably would’ve used 1 tablespoon 🤷‍♀️). As you can see the first recipe is missing basic details– measurements, temperatures, etc.

Setting goals for ourselves is much the same. I can say: I will lose weight. Well, that’s great but how will I go about it? What do I need? Will I diet only or just exercise– or both? Will someone help me? When do I want to reach my goal?

You have to believe, that the more detailed a plan you have–the more successful you will be. Oh! And don’t forget about friends, family and whomever else you can recruit to be your personal cheerleader. Big goals need dedicated cheerleaders to keep you going! You will fall, you will stumble– but you CAN achieve your goals.

So practice this week… write down two goals that you know you can accomplish by the end of next week. Maybe it is going to the grocery store and not stressing out (guilty 🙋‍♀️) . Or maybe try a goal of getting up on time to get your children to school before the tardy bell (guilty 🙋‍♀️ again)

Until next time!!! –Jessica
